PM David Cameron helps sell Oppo to the Italians

Ever heard of selling ice to the Eskimos? Well last Wednesday Charlie went off to sell ice cream to the Italians. Here’s the story…

I was lucky enough to join David Cameron on his RAF jet to the Milan Expo as part of the business delegation showcasing the best of British business and innovation. Oppo was one of four companies chosen: taking that invitation phone call was a nice surprise!

I joined the Prime Minister and the other delegates on an early Milan-bound flight from RAF Northolt, along with Laurence Kemball-Cook, founder of Pavegen Systems; Karen Lynch, CEO of Belu Water; and Janan Leo, founder of Cocorose.

A few ice-cream tasting, photo-snapping hours later, we arrived in Milan. It wasn’t the usual passport control that met us… perhaps Oppo should fly RAF more often!

We were whisked away at high speed to the Milan Expo. Again, forget traffic. Outriders just closed the road ahead.

Trying to remember that I'm not actually in an action film...

Wow. The Milan Expo. Over 140 exhibiting countries. 1.1 million square metres of exhibition area. In short, an international melting pot of ideas with each nation showcasing their achievements. The UK exhibition was showcasing the country’s strengths and contributions to the Expo’s theme of ‘Feeding the Planet. Energy for Life‘.

Post tour, we headed up to the roof terrace of the UK’s exhibition where they were introduced to the PM’s Italian counterpart, Matteo Renzi … by Mr Cameron himself.

The day concluded with the Queen’s Birthday Party Reception at Villa Necchi, a hidden gem of a building tucked away in the chaotic centre of Milan.

All in all, what an incredible day for Oppo. And as for the Italian reception? Well, all we can say is, that gelato has a healthy and ambitious competitor!
